Let’s hear it for innovation! It’s the driving force behind improvements in all areas of our lives, be they technological, ecological, and pretty much any other word ending in “-ical.” As a matter of fact, it was a new and innovative way of thinking that transformed a one-off tee shirt contest into… Threadless! And now it’s your turn... Your challenge is to create an amazing tee design based on innovation! Will you choose to depict innovations of the past, present, or future? Perhaps you have your own innovative ideas to present on a tee? The Consumer Electronics Association wants…

Congratulations to Daniel on his amazing "3 Eyes, 3 Vehicles" tee. Not only did it catch the eyes of the Threadless community, but it also turned the heads of folks at NYC's New Museum! They chose this design out of the pack to represent the New Art & New Ideas that are showcased there every day. As part of the design challenge, we flew Daniel to NYC (from France!) to be a part of our launch party for the tee at the museum itself! Let's all give him a big ol' round of applause!!!

What does ‘Pop’ mean to you? (We aren’t talking fizzy beverages, people). Does it elevate the everyday or take the stuffing out of high culture? Or is it simply art that’s not afraid of being a product? Whatever the theory, it’s undoubtedly visually striking and your interpretation will look stunning on a tee in the Tate Modern shop! Your challenge is to design a tee inspired by the Tate Modern Museum’s Pop Life exhibition. Check out the Tate's challenge page! First thing first, let me tell you the equation: Movember (yes, that’s next month!) + No Star (my fav vintage-styled tee maker) = Mo Star So what’s the catch here? I’m sure you’re aware that Movember is a yearly, month-long celebration of the mustache, highlighting men’s health issues. But do you know that your mustache can cure cancer? As reported by Mustache Glory, there are a pair of popular charities that seek to cure cancer through the growth of glorious mustaches — Movember and Mustache vs. Cancer. 22 Oct 2009 | 4:11 pm
Halloween is just around the corner and everyone wants to take their part to make this planet a little bit creepier. It’s strange that indie clothing label Crywolf choose to turn its wolfie mascot into a zombie instead of a werewolf. Hmm… I was thinking that perhaps becoming a zombie is one of the least complicated undead experiences. And there are many ways when you choose the zombie path: like voodoo curse, viral transmission or inject yourself with the zombie virus. Becoming a zombie may not be as glamorous as becoming a romantic-vampire or muscular-werewolf but at least we…

Little to say about this shirt - other than the simple fact that I spent roughly 3 years of my childhood drawing nothing but atari symbols. “everyone draw an animal from the zoo children” - wait half an hour - “oh that’s a nice atari logo with a monkey swinging from it”. So this is what I’d have drawn as a memory from our school trip to paris - had we been on a school trip to paris.

Patterns and forms can be found just about anywhere. Take a look around the room and I bet you can find a number of examples of natural and man-made patterns. They often get ignored. Not at ctrl-clothes.com where these modern, abstract forms are front and centre. The triangles, squares, lines and shapes are certainly fresh and original, and remind me a little bit of a mix between my geometry class and class trip to the modern art museum. Even so, we’ll still be known for cheap custom t-shirts because you shouldn’t have to pay a lot to get high quality. Please let us know how You Design It can help you out with your next t-shirt project.

  • Better Late Than Never

    6 Nov 2009 | 11:59 am
I find myself forgetting about some sites more than others, regardless of my initial excitement, and one such casualty is Ink-Hound. It's a site I haven't even ordered from, despite a few tees I quite wanted early on. So it brings me great joy to be able to speak of them again today.Their current shirt (available for about another week) is Ghost Ship. It's a little late for prime appreciation, Halloween being a week gone by now, but the style here is something that could easily be a year-round wear. The color scheme is one that I'm ever in love with... the softness of the ink palette looks…
  • Contest Watch: Week of October 29

    5 Nov 2009 | 7:18 pm
If it seems, dear readers, that I have been neglecting you... well, OK, I have. You got me. I've actually found it hard to buckle down and blog lately. Or really stay up past 9pm. But when I start neglecting the most important post of the week, that is when I clearly need to rein it in. So without further adieu, the latest crop of awesome for the annals of to-be-printed.We'll start today at shirt.woot with EdgarRMcHerly's "Lon and Mr. C Visit God," which is as appropriate a title as we're apt to get for this. It's no secret there's a lot of Edgar love 'round these parts, and it's nice to once…
  • Pinkyderm

    4 Nov 2009 | 9:56 pm
Just a quickie note to state that today is the day of our choice of Teextile print of the week. Word 2 tha' Herd by biotwist is a fun and bold piece, swarming with elephants covering every last inch of the front, with a single pink specimen over the heart, standing apart from the tight-packed herd while being no less part of it. The pink on the silver actually is a rather nice color contrast, especially with the thick outlines, and while the particulars aren't groundbreaking, the boldness of the execution is nevertheless something quite special. My only qualm is not knowing if this will wrap…

    2 Nov 2009 | 7:50 am
Today, for one day only, Threadless is slashing shipping. And by slashing, I mean there is none. For anyone. So if you happen to be in England, or Mexico, or New Zealand, or Mars (presuming they ship to Mars), your shipping is just as free as ours here in the states. It's from now til Tuesday, 11am Eastern (that's like 3p GMT, for the rest of y'all to base off of), so now's a great time to make those small orders that you might otherwise have put off for too much shipping.Since it's all about Travel at Threadless today, how about checking out last week's brilliant "Void" while you're there?

Oh what a week for Threadless... with no less than four awesome tees making their way immediately into my cart, it's easy enough to call this one of their best weeks ever. We may end up saying more about more of them later, but for now, let us focus on a former star of film, screen and contest watch.Cruel Joke garners tenso his alumni shield, and a deserving win it is from a guy that seems to be chock full of puns and non sequitors. It's a totally Threadless joke tee... any good one should have a solid punchline and a style that doesn't distract from that joke. This one delivers with a little…

We’ve had a mailing address up on the site for a little while now, and to our surprise, a bunch of lines have sent in t-shirts over the past few months. (Thanks guys!) To be perfectly honest, most of them are still sitting in pile in a corner, but only because we were surprised by the volume and hadn’t entirely decided on how to best review them. But indecision has been brushed aside and we’re going to be running a new regular column with hands-on reviews of many of the t-shirts we’ve received. Nice submission via email the other day from the folks at TUG (”Tactical Urban Gears” for the uninitiated, and no, we have no clue what that means either), who produce some highly graphic designs with heavy Japanese influences. Base in Singapore, the company launches with 5 designs in their line (some shown below) with more in the works. Many of you may be familiar with Flying Mouse. He is a prolific designer with extraordinary talent and as evidenced in his designs, originality, imagination and a quirky sense of humor. He has been very successful at Threadless with about 17 prints from his original account (Flying Mouse) and 7 more from his Flying Mouse 365 account. Yes, he has two accounts at Threadless. The second account, Flying Mouse 365 was a challenge that he set himself. The intention is to submit a new design to Threadless every day for  a year. Cofounded by Bono and other campaigners, ONE is nonpartisan and works closely with African policy makers and activists. Ript Apparel seems to be getting better with age. I have followed these guys for a while now and some of their latest prints have to be hits. The colors and designs are so compelling… it just looks like they’re getting into a groove. I don’t know when the last time you have checked out their wears, but today’s shirt and a recent print called Campione really caught my eye. Campione’s colors go together beautifully and the “little red riding hood” style goes perfectly. Throw in the standard $10 price from Ript and it’s hard to go wrong. Check it…

As I sat down to prepare the Halloween edition post for Color Overload, I started to think this may be tougher than I thought. With the increasingly popular trend of gruesome designs including zombies and guts, you might think it’s Halloween year-round in our world. With that said, a few things worth mentioning is the autumn pre-holidays so being held at Design By Humans. The tees are starting at $15 and the sale ends midnight Sunday. I couldn’t mention Halloween and gruesome designs without including a few from Emptees. These designs are cool year-round and just feel that much…

    Darren
    22 Oct 2009 | 8:35 am
Why do we see the majority of new clothing lines with single color prints on their t-shirts? It’s pretty simple economics…it’s much cheaper. The only problem with that is, a single color design is much harder to sell with people or a high quality multicolor designs in the t-shirt marketplace. With all that said, it is very refreshing to see a line like Holebrain doing the single color print and making it look good. In fact you hardly even notice the lack of color, because the design work so well with the color of the t-shirt. The style is simple and clean/cute. This is how a…

For being a horrible guy, it’s kind of strange how many ways you can combine Mao into other words and phrases, most commonly in ROFLMAO–I think that was one of the first shirts I ever wrote about, from the now defunct Dirty Microbe. Damn, that was a long sentence, and probably a run-on. It’s late though, so who cares? That being said, I like this one way more than ROFLMAO. I think one of the biggest reasons is its Mao with mouse ears, but also messaging acronyms have greatly fallen from my favor. You can find this one on the venerable site known as Etsy, from a shop called…

Milk & Eggs Co is a Californian design team who produce T-shirts and buttons. Why buttons? Who knows, but they come in sets of four and are very cute. If your weather is anything like my weather (and I hope it’s not, as my weather is lousy) then the very thought of Cali is worth entertaining – sunshine, sea, laid-backness. And there’s something very laid back about the Milk & Eggs Co style. Leaving aside the infuriating T-shirt that says ‘Dont injure yourself’ without an apostrophe (why?) their work is both crisp and calm, a difficult balancing act to pull off. I’m…

Is it possible to get a well-designed Halloween T-shirt? If you look around, you’ll decide the answer is no. There is so much pumpkin headed, witch on a broomstick style dreck out there that it’s depressing. What is it about major festivals and fun that draws all the lousy designers out of their hiding places to inflict their rubbish on us? Oh yeah, it’s the chance to get our money … how stupid of me. But if you hunt them down, there are good tees out there. I’m impressed by The Horde for three reasons. One, it’s a modern take on the Halloween theme, two, the colourways are…

Sometimes an entrepreneur also has the soul of an artist. Mark Capicotto might be that man. Since 2005 he’s been producing the most beautiful teeshirts, full of heart and colour, and with a rightly, brightly, youthful vibe that can’t help but bring a smile to your face. And his line is called Glamour Kills. This little piggy is the Glamour Kills icon – he flies, he smiles and he’s been around since the first T-shirts were printed in Mark’s basement. What I am loving about this image, apart from the longevity, is the way that the overprinting isn’t dense so you get a lovely marl…

This perfect garment art is just $16:00 and can take up to three weeks to arrive. You may or may not have heard about the fuss over Jan Moir commenting on the untimely death of Stephen Gately. It rather depends on whether you’re under thirty, in which case the Boyzone star’s untimely death will be big in your horizon, or over thirty, in which case you shouldn’t be reading this blog, probably. Anyway – it’s a sordid little tale of homophobia and twitter backlash, but every cloud has a silver lining as some idiot will always tell you when you’ve been splashed by a bendy bus, and the silver lining to this story is the pure and perfect joy of this T-shirt by Cath…

The print is pretty big and most of the ripper's figure is filled with a nice fleur-de-lis pattern. I totally adore this new design and the choice of this color is just amazing, and as Joe puts it "the choice of making this a gold print is like having the dim street lights just outlining this deviant murderer".In other news, Akumu Ink also launches 3 packages of shirts and hoodies, so you can now buy 3 t-shirts for $58.99 (10% savings), or 2 t-shirts and 1 mystery t-shirt for…

Halloween tees are real hit and miss. No where near as bad as Christmas themed stuff, (which is only worn by your mom), but often a bit cheesy. That said, here’s our pick for good Halloween tees this year. Chopshop has always been one of our favorites. Their icon based stuff is unique and ads a nice dimension to the designs. Because I'm prone to longwindedness (see, even that word was long), I'm going to try to make this as short and sweet as possible.  Yes, Shirts on Sale is dead...and it's totally my fault.  Due to certain circumstances in my life (nothing's wrong, don't worry!), we are unable to maintain the high level of quality you've come to expect from our site.  We would rather shutter our doors than offer our awesome community less-than-stellar service. This change has nothing to do with our committed writers and their work.  Ryan and I both agree that the current lineup, our biggest…

These white ravens (if that's what they are) have really taken to this phonograph. Dancing to the beat, all night long. Trust me -- they're smart enough to learn the waltz. Well... maybe not, but they're smart enough to know good music when they hear it.It's a flock thing. And like all flock activity, birdie see birdie do. Two has become three. The new guy flying in is about ready to get his groove on.Where was he before this, you ask? Bugging the hell out of Poe. Croaking, "Nevermore!"If he tries any of that stuff here, he'll get kicked out...or worse...pass it on. We'll be surrounded by…

Somewhere, in a new form, on a new journey. Here's hoping, everybody!

Refreshingly punny after a long month of scare affairs, today's shirt.woot is cute, funny, and great on gray. BootsBoots (which is my favorite artist name for highly personal reasons) has done a rare thing by creating a design good enough to float without the pun. Her whales are honestly adorable, so I'd get the shirt even before I got the joke. We've been a little tough on past designs by BootsBoots, but tonight really turned me around. 28 Oct 2009 | 2:50 am
It’s amazing what a talented designer can do. When it comes to design, everybody has in mind a certain image, but not everybody is able to transpose those things into real images. Here comes the artists’ contribution. A custom design is much more complicated, because the final result must satisfy the client first of all, even if the entire work is done by the designer. I believe the designs are under rated and the designers are considered by some clients like their “personal artists”. Sometimes they just say…”I want you to change that and that and add that there…and if I like…

Holy Crap is a fun little gem that I discovered over at Sharp Shirter, the same guys that brought us the popular Haymaker tee. The design itself is a bit sci-fi-ish, okay, it’s a lot sci-fi-ish. Its also got a little bit of asian influence with the anime like main characters on the front. I almost feel like this design could be a frame from a major hollywood summer blockbuster. It’s got this huge epic feel to it. I guess with dinosaurs, UFO’s and zombies, it has got to be epic. In need for a good plot to your next big screenplay? Pick up this shirt for inspiration. You can…

Its such an important word. They say first impressions mean a lot. A smile paired with a friendly hello often makes for a good first impression. You can buy the Hello T-Shirt by Buddy Carr and Antonio Carusone for $22.

  • New This Week at Threadless

    13 Oct 2009 | 12:47 pm
Exit by Chow Hon Lam is by far my favorite tee of the week- probably one of the top shirts all year. The concept is simple, showing a raincoated girl carrying an umbrella who parts the rain like a curtain. It's a surreal looking design that feels really classic, with a clarity to the art that makes it all the more appealing. The regular dashes of the rain feel like a pattern, and the placement is perfect because it showcases the concept rather than the pattern (a full shirt print would have done the opposite, in my opinion). I do have one quibble- the girl's legs don't feel as well rendered…
  • Bookis.org: Crowdfunding T-Shirts

    12 Oct 2009 | 8:45 am
Bookis.org is a new crowdfunding site for shirt designs, allowing designers to upload their work, determine their desired profit per item, and then putting those products up for pre-order (and eventually order) by the community.I'd describe their model as being halfway between Cameesa and CafePress- unlike Cameesa, there's no financial incentive to supporting a design. But unlike Cafepress, designs aren't printed on demand- they're only printed once the required number of preorders can be met. One benefit to Bookis is that they allow the rights to the artwork to remain with the designer,…
  • New This Week at Design By Humans

    11 Oct 2009 | 9:13 am
Hello, My Darling by robsoul is my pick for best of the week- it tells a great story, and has a uniquely spooky look. The bright blue of the walking corpse makes him feel not quite like a mindless zombie and more like something that was once a man, but has since been transformed both mentally and physically. His eye has a look that is more wistful than menacing, creating the impression that for this monster, this is the closest to a genuine human moment he will have for some time. I like that there's the extra punch of the woman's head printed on the back of the shirt, and that what did that…

You might think that William Shakespeare is the farthest thing there is to a hood rat, but, apparently the good people at Goodie Two Sleeves believe the opposite. They claim that William Shakespeare was the thug to end all thugs. Apparently he was to the 1500’s what Jay-Z and Snoop Dogg are to us now. He embodied what it was to live a harsh life, running from the law and drinking and smoking illicit things. William Shakespeare was a homie. Yes, that’s right. A homie. If you agree, then this shirt is for you. Pick it up from Goodie Two Sleeves for $21.98. Other great deals to…

I discovered this T-Shirt over at the Spanish site, Camisetas Locas and I was instantly drawn to it because .. well, I’m drawn to anything that’s Apple related. I’ve encountered many a Space Invaders parody but none quite like this one. The shirt is called What’s Bill Gates Playing and features some of Apple’s most important entities as the enemy (Apple logo, Quicktime, iPod). The shirt is pretty funny, I would have liked to have seen little iPods liter the shirt rather than the word “iPod”, but that’s just a minor detail. I do think, however,…

Yeah, yeah, I know it hasn’t been that long since I last made a post about 410 BC, but simply I love this tee too much to not write about it. (That and it was taken down for some reason while I was writing the other post.) “Modern Knight” depicts a medieval knight accented with modern art stylings, geometric shapes, and other photographic elements.  I like the way the shark’s jaws frames the logo, which is inconspicuously and artfully placed; this is a great example of having branding in your product without making it obnoxious, and it certainly helps that ‘410…

I have to say, I’m fairly disappointed in Ten Bills.  After their revamp, they sold one new design a day, printed on American Apparel, for both men and women, at the titular price of $10.  Granted, these designs were far from spectacular, but it was still nice to see them offer quality blanks and women’s sizes.  They’ve done away with this model in recent weeks, instead opting to offer five new preorder designs a week.  Suddenly, the American Apparel blanks are gone, as are the women’s sizes.  If you’re going to sell your product on a preorder-only basis,…

Today’s shirt at Teextile is all too cool. If you like elephants and all-over prints, then this tee is most definitely for you.  The jury’s still out on whether or not this print extends to the back of the shirt (judging from previous examples, it probably won’t), but it’s still a neat tee either way.  Using pink for the stand-out elephant was a great color choice by artist biotwist; it excellently complements the tee’s whimsical, child-like feel, and looks good against the silver background.  Another noteworthy highlight of this design is the sheer number of…
